Do you know what this is for?

Joukouro-Incense Burner
We call this incense burner “Joukouro(常香炉)”.
It’s believed that the incense smoke chases away evil spirits.
Put the smoke on the part of your body that is painful or bad and then the pain goes away.
It’s said that putting this smoke on yourself will heal that part of your body.
Kouganji-Joukouro
So those people in the picture are putting the smoke on their head.
But their head isn’t poor probably.
Generally, most of people put the smoke on their head from what I have ever seen.
But you can put it on anywhere you like.
Where do you want to put the smoke on your body?

This incense burner is in the Kouganji.
There are different kinds of incense burner each of temples.
You can see it if you go to a temple.
